Summer Camp in July 1998 saw us leaving
Cupar on 03 July around 1930 and heading South with two minibuses and trailers,
aiming to cross from Harwich to Hook of Holland then on to Arnhem to camp with
the Dutch troop who had shared our summer camp with us at Kenmore in 1996. Our
group comprised 19 Scouts (inc. 2 females), 3 Ventures (inc. 2 females), and 3
Leaders (inc. 1 lady).
The journey South was, as expected, a long
one with a low average speed and frequent stops. However we arrived with time
to spare and cooked breakfast at the ferry port, much to the amusement of the
other travellers.
The Ferry journey was quick and after a couple of hours driving in Holland we arrived at Scouting Kampeerterrein "De Waterberg" Arnhem which is on the North fringe of Arnhem and set in a lovely wooded area. The site good though basic with fresh water and a couple of flush toilets. Our Dutch friends had prepared "Chilli" for our tea and after nearly 24 hours travelling it was nice to get the tents up and take a break.
We had only 3 full days in
Arnhem before we left for Wiltz in Luxembourg, but amongst the usual scouting
activities we found time for a day at the famous Burger Zoo which was just a
short walk from the camp. With 26 of us wearing kilts I think we found our
group to be of as much interest as some of the exhibits!
Our Last night finished with
the traditional exchanging of gifts and a good sing song around a blazing
campfire.
The weather had not been to bad although we had experienced quite a few rain
showers.
